Cleaning Protocols

Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting

Although they are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a difference between these terms.

  • Cleaning simply removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces by using detergent or soap and water to lower the number of germs, which lessens the risk of spreading infection.
  • Sanitizing lowers the number of germs to a “safe level” by either cleaning or disinfecting, and is generally a bit gentler than disinfecting.
  • Disinfecting does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces but, by killing nearly 100% of germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further reduce the risk of spreading infection.

Protecting interior surfaces from COVID-19

The CDC states that the most effective method for minimizing the risk of spreading COVID-19 is to regularly clean first, then disinfect, frequently touched surfaces. Diluted bleach (10:1 water/bleach solution) or isopropyl alcohol (70% solution) is the most common disinfection agent used in commercial interiors. Many other registered cleaners and disinfectants can be found on the EPA’s List N. For additional information about cleaning and disinfecting, refer to our FAQs.
